Serbia secure late draw in Denmark

Denmark and Serbia both remain in with a chance of securing top spot in Group 4 of UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying after drawing 1-1 in Aalborg.

Denmark looked set to finish the day at the summit thanks to Simon Makienok's opener, but Nikola Ninković's equaliser ensured Serbia head into the final matchday two points clear. They face the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on Monday, when the Danes host Northern Ireland. FYROM could still finish at the summit themselves should they beat Serbia and Denmark fail to win.

It could have panned out differently for the visitors had Nemanja Kojić not spurned a splendid chance early on by shooting wide with just goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow to beat. Denmark, however, started to assume control and went in front when Makienok met Andreas Laudrup's cross with a looping header over Branimir Aleksić.

Serbia came out of their shell in the second half but Denmark almost put the game to bed with eight minutes left. Makienok set up Mads Albæk with a cute header but the home captain failed to test Aleksić. Serbia made the most of that reprieve, Ninković curling brilliantly past Rønnow from 25 metres to maintain their two-point cushion in Group 4.
