Turkey strengthened their hand in UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 7 with a 1-0 win against the Republic of Ireland.
The hosts, already victorious in their opening two fixtures of the campaign, took just ten minutes to take the lead once more, Şahin Aygüneş putting them in front. Ireland, who had won their first qualifier against Hungary, had no answer to that early strike and now trail Turkey by six points, with Italy also six points back but boasting two games in hand.
The Group 7 action resumes when the Azzurrini travel to Liechtenstein on 6 October, before Turkey play host to Hungary the following day. Ireland will hope to bounce back in Liechtenstein on 11 October, when Italy and Turkey lock horns in Rieti.
