With no team from either group yet qualified for the semi-finals, journalists and statisticians have been working overtime to calculate the various permutations for progress.
Yann Sommer's prescription for Switzerland is simple: win against Belarus in Aarhus on Saturday. Pierluigi Tami's Group A leaders may need only a point but the Swiss goalkeeper is demanding no change from the focus that has brought victories over Denmark and Iceland.
"We want to win this game," the 22-year-old captain said. "The team are very much focused on getting another victory. We have not spent much time worrying about different scenarios because we already have six points. But we could end up in a dangerous situation, so we have to play as we have in the first two games. That's the way we've got to approach it."
Sommer will be happy to carry on regardless, having earned praise from his coach for resisting late Danish pressure during Switzerland's opening-night success, which preceded a more routine defeat of Iceland. His heroics against Denmark would have come as no surprise back at his club, FC Basel 1893 – the 2011 Swiss champions have just parted with senior keeper Franco Costanzo in the knowledge it will give Sommer more opportunities.
"It's a difficult question as to which of the two matches I've enjoyed more," added Sommer of his side's campaign in Jutland. "Perhaps the first game was good for the team, we played well and I did my bit to get the win. Tomorrow, though, is another game and another situation and my only thought is winning. If the team play well, then I'll play well."
A good talker on the pitch, Sommer cuts an intelligent and assured figure off it. Although he made only five league appearances this season, he was central to Switzerland's qualification for these finals and also caught the eye with a stunning save in Basel's extra-time triumph against Servette FC in the Swiss Cup round of 16.
Just as his moment with Basel appears to be imminent with Costanzo's departure, so a shot at glory with Switzerland looms large. So far his biggest achievement is a Swiss Challenge League (or second division) winners' medal with FC Vaduz, where he played on loan from Basel, in 2008. Yet this veteran of the U21 team's play-off loss to Spain in 2009 qualifying is taking nothing for granted.
"We always said we would take it step by step. We played well against Denmark and we played well against Iceland. Now our only focus is to beat Belarus and then see where we go from there. Let's continue the positive run."
