Wieghorst lined up for Denmark U21 role

Morten Wieghorst will become Denmark's new Under-21 coach when Keld Bordinggaard steps down following this summer's UEFA European U21 Championship finals on home soil.

Former international midfielder Wieghorst, 40, will leave his present role leading Superliga side FC Nordsjælland to sign a two-year deal with the Danish Football Association (DBU). "I'm really happy with my job at Nordsjælland which I'm looking forward to finishing in the best possible way together this spring," Wieghorst said.

"I then can't wait to start working with the best young Danish talents and to be part of the group of national coaches at the DBU," added Wieghorst, who represented Lyngby BK, Dundee FC, Celtic FC and Brøndby IF as a player. He was also capped 30 times by Denmark and began his managerial career at Nordsjælland in 2006.

DBU general secretary Jim Stjerne Hansen said: "Morten Wieghorst was our first choice as Keld Bordinggaard's successor. He has the same philosophy that we have been implementing to develop our players, and which Bordinggaard, among others, helped define. We are going to have a new man in charge of the Under-21 team, but we will maintain continuity in the work."

This summer's UEFA European U21 Championship finals take place in Denmark between 11 and 25 June. Meanwhile, Denmark have been drawn against Serbia, Northern Ireland, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the Faroe Islands in the qualifying group stage for the competition's 2011/13 edition.
