A shock defeat by Armenia in their final game condemned Georgia to third place in Group 2 when victory could have sent them through to the UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-offs.
With Georgia's president Mikhail Saakashvili in the stands at Tbilisi's Mikheil Meskhi Stadium, the stage was set for a major success. Yet chances were not converted, and added-time goals from Artak Dashyan and Valter Poghosyan ensured a miserable finale for Otar Gabelia's side.
Irakli Klimiashvili and Tornike Okriashvili were a menace to Armenia throughout, but the visitors were to have the final say. Things were already desperate for the hosts when Dashyan blasted a long shot into the top corner, and Georgia's spirits were broken as Poghosyan danced past three defenders to beat goalkeeper Roin Kvaskhvadze.
