Switzerland are four points clear at the top of UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 2 following a 3-1 victory over Turkey in Trabzon.
Babacan blunder
Pierluigi Tami's side began the day a solitary point clear of their hosts but looked likely to extend that advantage as early as the seventh minute, when Valentin Stocker pounced on Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Babacan's error to head into an empty net. Stocker again got the better of Babacan two minutes before half-time to double the visitors' lead. Caner Erkin's powerful shot six minutes into the second period reduced Turkey's arrears but Switzerland's nerves were finally soothed in the penultimate minute of normal time when Shkelzen Gashi put the finishing touches to a counterattack with a precise lob over substitute goalkeeper Cenk Gönen. Turkey have a game in hand on Switzerland and will look to dust themselves off against Estonia on Wednesday when Switzerland host Georgia.
