Romania quickly put Friday's loss to Latvia behind them with a convincing 3-0 victory against the Faroe Islands in Botosani to reclaim top spot in Group 1.
Early breakthrough
Romania had won their opening four matches in the section before crashing to a 5-1 defeat in Riga, but they made amends on Tuesday. Eric Bicfalvi opened the scoring after five minutes with a 30-metre drive and though the home side suffered a scare when Cezar Lungu was called on twice in quick succession to save from Róaldur Jacobsen in the 12th minute, they doubled their lead before the break.
Ganea strikes
Liviu Ganea this time found the way through, firing in from 12 metres on 38 minutes following a nice one-two with Alexandru Ioniţă. The Faroe Islands beat Russia last month but there were to be no surprises here as Ganea teed up Andrei Ionescu to add the third 13 minutes after the restart as Romania followed up their 4-0 victory in Torshavn in June with another resounding success. Emil Săndoi's side are now back on top of Group 1, three points clear of Russia, who host Moldova on Wednesday.
