Goals from Dmitri Ryzhov and substitute Aleksandr Salughin saw Russia join UEFA European Under-21 Championship Group 1 leaders Romania on 12 points as they avenged an embarrassing 1-0 defeat in the Faroe Islands.
Charmed life
Igor Kolyvanov's side lost 1-0 in Torshavn in June, but this time the coach made no mistake, with a three-pronged attack of Aleksandr Kokorin, Ryzhov and Pavel Yakovlev giving the visitors no chance. Ryzhov it was who opened the scoring too, reacting sharply after Evgeni Balyaykin had hit the crossbar to collect his fourth goal of the qualifying campaign on 21 minutes. Igor Gorbatenko also hit the bar before the break while Christian Mouritsen's free-kick drew a great save from Russia's Sergei Pesyakov. The hosts enjoyed the lion's share of the chances after the restart and Hans Jørgensen's goal led a charmed life until Alan Gatagov squared for fellow substitute Salughin to settle the match.
