Ratomir Dujković has been named as the new coach of Serbia, succeeding Slobodan Krčmarević with the 34-year-old stepping down having led the side in last month's UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Vast experience
The 63-year-old Dujković has signed a two-year contract and will take charge of the team for the first time in a friendly against Israel in Novi Sad on 11 August. The executive committee of the Football Association of Serbia plumped for Dujković – who has previously had spells in charge of the senior national teams of Venezuela, Myanmar, Rwanda, Ghana and China, leading Ghana to the last 16 of the 2006 FIFA World Cup – to guide the team through qualifying for the 2011 European U21 Championship, which starts against Slovakia on 5 September.
'Touch the top'
"This is a new challenge for me; after so many years I shall work for the first time in my life in my own country," Dujković said. "I have a great wish to work with young stars – I know they'll soon be playing for the senior national team. I have more than 15 players who were included in the squad for the U21 finals in Sweden and that means so much. We have a strong team, great experience at U21 level, and I expect that finally we can touch the top. I'm really optimistic and believe in my new team."
