Seven-goal Berg tops scorers list

Marcus Berg has been confirmed as the top scorer in the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, with the 22-year-old receiving the adidas Golden Boot award after the final between England and Germany.

Unparalleled efficiency
The Sweden striker scored seven times at the finals, making him the most prolific scorer at a U21 final tournament. "It is a great honour to receive the adidas Golden Boot award," said the FC Groningen striker. "At the end of the day, football is about winning, and winning is about scoring more goals than the other team. However, every single goal requires a team effort and therefore I would like to share this award with my team-mates and thank them for their support."

'Fantastic team'
He added: "We had a fantastic team and it was really easy to play. My favourite goal was the second one against Belarus, when [Ola] Toivonen passed to me. I shot it with one touch and it was a really nice goal. We wanted to play in the final, and I think we played really well in the tournament and would have had a chance in the final. Of course I am disappointed but I'm also proud and happy." Berg added that he was touched by the ovation his side received at the Malmö New Stadium during a lap of hounour at half-time. "It was fantastic," he said. "We didn't even play but the audience celebrated like we had won the championship and it was really nice."

'Great show'
Berg scored a hat-trick in his side's opening game against Belarus and then two goals in both the group stage game against Serbia and the semi-final defeat by England.
