Alexander Baumjohann and fellow 22-year-old Mike Frantz may get a first chance to impress in Germany's friendly games against the Netherlands and Belarus after Horst Hrubesch named them in his latest Under-21 squad.
Impressive showings
VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach's midfielder Baumjohann, who will join FC Bayern München in the summer, has received a call-up along with forward Mike Frantz, who has impressed in the second tier with 1. FC Nürnberg. Hrubesch is experimenting with new players with Gonzalo Castro, Mats Hummels and Kevin-Prince Boateng sidelined through injury and Andreas Beck, Marko Marin and Serdar Tasci in the senior squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Wales.
Hand-picked opponents
Germany play the Netherlands in Ahlen on 27 March and Belarus in Paderborn four days later. Hrubesch explained: "We have deliberately chosen these opponents. The Netherlands are playing their senior reserve side against us, which should be high quality. We all know about the strengths of Dutch football and these duels between neighbours are always especially interesting. In Belarus, we have an opponent who also qualified for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. The team is very sound tactically and plays at high speed."
