Denmark advanced from Group 6 to the play-offs for the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship after defeating Scotland 1-0 to claim one of the four best runners-up spots.
Pedersen strike
Nicklas Pedersen got the only goal on 28 minutes as Denmark moved above Scotland thanks to a better head-to-head record, and into second position and the play-offs – on goal difference from champions the Netherlands and Croatia. Denmark coach Keld Bordinggaard made five changes to the side beaten 2-1 by Finland on Friday, two forced by suspension, but it was Scotland who dominated the opening 25 minutes. They were unable to create meaningful chances, however, and on 28 minutes the hosts struck. Pedersen collected Thomas Enevoldsen's long pass before lifting the ball over his marker and firing in.
Scotland press
Although Scotland continued to apply pressure, Denmark came close to adding to their advantage on 38 minutes when Mike Jensen was denied by Jamie McDonald in the visitors' goal. Scotland pushed for the equaliser after the break, knowing a point would almost certainly take them into the play-offs, but Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel stopped everything that came his way. The locals ultimately could have won by more as both Jens Gjesing and Pedersen hit the crossbar, before Jesper Lange had an effort blocked by McDonald.
