Crossbar intervenes
Nikos Nioplias's side went into the match in Kesariani looking to build on Friday's eye-catching 1-1 draw with Group 1 leaders Italy, though it was to prove a mostly frustrating evening. After dominating the first half Greece finally broke the deadlock when Panathinaikos FC forward Petropoulos converted Ioannis Papadopoulos's pinpoint cross – the goal coming minutes after a Lazaros Hristodoulopoulos free-kick had come back off the crossbar. It was not the last time the Faroe Islands, second-from-bottom in the section, were rescued by the woodwork, as four minutes from time Mihalis Pavlis contrived to blaze against the bar after capitalising on an error by goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen.
