Montenegro secured the draw they needed against Bulgaria in Niksic to finish their maiden Under-21 campaign in third place in Group 3 behind England and Portugal.
Cautious approach
A cautious approach by the home side handed the initiative to Bulgaria although their threat only really materialised in the shape of a 43rd-minute opportunity, where Nikolay Bodurov headed a Nikolay Bulgarov centimetres wide. Montenegro stepped up a gear in the second half and twice went close to scoring themselves through the dangerous Fatoš Bećiraj.
Efforts thwarted
The striker's first shot from close range was blocked by Bulgaria defender Ivan Ivanov before his header in the 75th minute forced a save from Nikolay Mihaylov. The hosts' defence then remained solid for the rest of the contest, enabling them to end the campaign with eight points from as many games, one more than their opponents.
