Goalkeeping error
Seeking the three points which would have lifted them off the bottom of the section and above the Faroe Islands, Azerbaijan took the lead 18 minutes in when Ruslan Abushev headed in a corner. The lead lasted just seven minutes, though, after Gudmund Nielsen seized upon goalkeeper Salahat Agayev's mistake to score.
Contrasting fortunes
Vugar Nadyrov restored the hosts' lead when he coolly finished off a one-on-one after 32 minutes, and Azerbaijan continued to press after half-time in an attempt to secure the points. Nadyrov had the chance to do so, but he failed to convert a penalty after he had been brought down, and he was made to pay ten minutes from time when Hanssen made no mistake with a spot-kick of his own.
