Vieirinha spot-kick
Stuart Pearce's injury-hit side got off to the worst of starts when Portugal, who began the day six points adrift of the section leaders with a game in hand, earned an early penalty after Craig Gardner had brought down Vieirinha. The diminuitive winger picked himself up to score from the spot and the home side's lead was seldom questioned before Adam Johnson restored parity just after half-time, volleying in following Joe Mattock's long throw. Theo Walcott fired wide and the Arsenal FC man then brought a fine save from Ricardo Batista as England finished stronger but Portugal held on.
