Austria moved closer to a place in the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying play-offs as Marco Stankovic earned them a 2-1 victory against Cyprus in Famagusta.
Shelis equaliser
Stankovic hit the decisive goal eleven minutes after half-time, springing the offside trap and beating goalkeeper Nikolas Asprogenis in a one-on-one. That put the hosts on course for a fourth consecutive Group 7 defeat, a result they had appeared set to avoid as the first half came to a conclusion. Despite falling behind to an eighth-minute Erwin Hoffer strike, Georgios Shelis levelled for Cyprus and Antros Kouloumbris's team had chances to go in front before Stankovic scored to leave them bottom of the section. Austria are six points clear of Slovakia at the top.
