Late strikes put Spain on top

Spain 3-0 Poland Two goals in second-half stoppage time enabled the hosts to claim top spot on goal difference from Russia.

Iñaki Sáez's side joined Russia on top of Group 4 with maximum points from their four games, with two goals in second-half stoppage time enabling the hosts to claim top spot on goal difference.

Own goal
Poland had held firm against the Spanish attack in the early stages and looked to be heading in to the break on level terms until a cruel twist of fate gave the home side the lead. Despite dominating first-half possession, Spain failed to produce any clear-cut chances at the Estadio El Toralín in Ponferrada until Kamil Glik put through his own net. The visiting side picked up their game in the second half yet they could not find the breakthrough with Roberto performing solidly in the Spanish goal.

Late double
It was not until three minutes into injury time that Spain made the game safe with Bojan Krkić firing in after some indecisiveness in the Poland area. Diego Capel rounded off the night with the third goal moments before the final whistle. Spain and Russia are both yet to concede in qualifying with their meetings next August and October likely to decide the outcome of the section.
