Article body
An early goal from Goran Vujović gave Montenegro their second ever victory in UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying and left the Republic of Ireland still searching for their first point in Group 3.
Early winner
Vujović scored the only goal in the fourth minute with a powerful shot from ten metres after good work by Marko Ćetković, but they had to withstand sustained second-half pressure. Stephen Quinn and Keith Treacy were denied by goalkeeper Bojan Radanovic, while Aidan Downes and Connor Sammon each squandered presentable opportunities as Montenegro held on.
Impressive debutants
"We played our worst game so far but won," said Montenegrin coach Dušan Vlaisavljevic. "That's football. We were lucky, but we fought bravely and I must congratulate my players for their effort. We have six points in very difficult group. That's very good for debutants on the international stage." His Irish counterpart, Sean McCaffrey, said: "I am very disappointed. We had lots of possession and good opportunities in second half, but no luck."
