Matt Derbyshire's early goal was enough to give England a third win in as many Group 3 qualifying games and keep Stuart Pearce's side top of the section.
Tidy finish
England made a purposeful start and were denied a ninth-minute opener when Steven Taylor's header rebounded off the post following a deep Tom Huddlestone corner. Derbyshire was not to be denied though, finishing calmly on 20 minutes after James Milner threaded a perfect pass through the centre of the Montenegro defence.
Woodwork repeat
The home side were always in control and were denied by the woodwork again after 64 minutes. Another Huddlestone corner created the danger with Nedum Onuoha heading against the crossbar but England had done enough to earn the three points. The win gives England a maximum nine-point haul, three better off than Portugal, while Montenegro have three points from four group games.
