Antunes tried his luck with a long-range effort on 33 minutes, although Vierinha subsequently wasted the visitors' best opening following a corner kick. Portugal were made to pay three minutes before the interval when Domovchiyski was brought down in the area by defender Pedro before calmly converting the spot-kick. Bulgaria opted to sit back and protect their slender advantage in the second period, and did so with aplomb in the torrential rain to claim a notable scalp and climb off the foot of the section.
