Crucial victory
The home side, runners-up at the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals, were in need of a victory having been held in their opening game by Latvia. Belarus, who had won both their fixtures, started brightly but it was Serbia who made the breakthrough after 22 minutes when left-back Nikola Petković scored a brilliant goal from 25 metres. Ljubomir Fejsa was forced into a goal-line clearance minutes later but Serbia controlled the game thereafter. Fejsa (62) finished from 12 metres and Nikola Ðurić (87) headed in to seal the points with Belarus gaining a last-minute consolation through Serguei Kryvets.
