Article body
Belgium's aspirations of emulating their 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Championship semi-final appearance were dealt an immediate blow as they started their Group 7 qualifying campaign with a 1-0 loss to Austria.
Schiemer header
Franz Schiemer was the hero for the visitors, rising to head a beautifully floated cross past goalkeeper Yves Makabu Ma-Kalambay as Belgium were left to rue missed opportunities. Tom De Mul, Jonathan Legear and Jeanvion Yulu-Matondo all had chances in a dominant first-half performance but even after Schiemer had put them behind, it was Makabu Ma-Kalambay that was the busier goalkeeper. Belgium did have one chance when Ibrahim Maaroufi struck from just outside the area but his effort failed to hit the target.
