Pearce delight as charges do enough

Stuart Pearce felt England were "deserved" winners against a much-changed Serbia team who left coach Miroslav Djukić proud and confident for the semi-finals.

Both Stuart Pearce and Miroslav Djukić were able to look forward after England defeated Serbia 2-0 to join the Group B winners in the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Leroy Lita and Matt Derbyshire scored the goals which secured England a last-four meeting with the Netherlands, and left Italy with just an Olympic place to play for, while Djukić took heart from the performances of his fringe players as he rested key men before Wednesday's semi against Belgium. uefa.com hears from the coaches in Nijmegen.

Stuart Pearce, England manager
It was a typical game between a team that have qualified and one that are still chasing qualification. We started well and were a bit lax and sloppy after the goal which was disappointing but I'm delighted with the result. We won a tight game tonight that I felt we deserved to and now we can look ahead to the semi-finals. For me the biggest thing is 2-0. The biggest thing is about Leroy Lita scoring. The biggest thing is Matt Derbyshire scoring. The biggest thing is a semi-final against Holland. I think the atmosphere with the Dutch could help us rather than hinder us while [in the other semi-final] Serbia will benefit from resting as many players as they did tonight and they might be slight favourites against Belgium.

Miroslav Djukić, Serbia coach
We expected a tough game but feel unfortunate as England had three shots and scored twice. They are a very good team but I think we could have got more from this tonight. I'm very proud of my young players - they did very well and gave a good account of themselves. I am really satisfied with the players that came in and now we have a big group of players who are all ready to play. England are strong and we saw that here but I am not concerned with that tonight - I'm concerned only with my team.
