Jong Oranje robbed of Afellay

PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Afellay will miss the Netherlands' UEFA European Under-21 Championship campaign after sustaining a serious ankle injury.

The 21-year-old, who made his senior international debut in a UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifier against Slovenia in March, has been forced to withdraw from the finals following discussions with the PSV and Jong Oranje medical staff after scans revealed that he had damaged his ankle. Afellay also missed out on the 2006 U21 championships through injury as the Netherlands won the tournament and will be bitterly disappointed to play no part as the finals are played on home territory this summer.
