Ukraine get it spot on

Olexiy Mykhaylychenko felt that he got his tactics spot on as his Ukraine side worked tirelessly to nullify the Netherlands in their Group B opener.

Olexiy Mykhaylychenko, Ukraine coach
It's extremely important to start with a win. Naturally there were some nerves at the start but we overcame that and demonstrated what we are about. We have put a lot of research into the Dutch and that paid off. We felt that it was best to attack them down the flanks and that prevented them from playing. We're very happy with our win but we're also already thinking ahead to our next match. It was great to see so many supporters from Ukraine. There are a lot of Ukrainian citizens here and I think the majority of the fans in the stadium were behind us. I used the three players who will go to the [FIFA] World Cup as I spoke with [senior team coach] Oleg Blokhin and we decided it was better for these young players to go into that competition with the experience of a major championship behind them. It's no secret that Klaas Jan Huntelaar is a powerful forward for them and that's why we decided to have our captain Olexandr Yatsenko man-mark him - something he did very well.

Foppe de Haan, Netherlands coach
We didn't play very well. We had difficulty in the first half switching the ball from back to front as Ukraine had a lot of players in midfield and our midfield was spread too far apart. If you don't get control in midfield you have to play long balls against a physical team and that's not how we want to play football. We played better in the second half but were caught out trying to play offside. We played more balls to feet then but didn't create a lot of chances - one or two in the first half, not enough in the second. They scored twice and deserved to win. We weren't surprised by how well they played but they could still end up with three points and on the bottom of the group. We have to look at ourselves and play well in the next game.
