Italy have called up Reggina Calcio's Davide Biondini after losing key midfielder Alberto Aquilani on the eve of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Portugal.
Ligament damage
The 21-year-old AS Roma player suffered ligament damage to his right knee in training, forcing coach Claudio Gentile to rethink his midfield plans. Aquilani, who struck three goals in 24 Serie A appearances this season, played seven times and scored twice to help Italy reach these finals. The 23-year-old Biondini, with 28 Italian top-flight matches under his belt in 2005/06, will be in the squad when the Azzurrini kick off their campaign against Denmark on Wednesday night.
