Picusciac decisive
The only goal came when forward Igor Picusciac struck eleven minutes before the interval. The home side enjoyed the majority of the first-half possession with Alexandru Gatcan and Nicolae Josan going close. Picusciac then secured a deserved lead when he headed in Igor Tigirlas's free-kick.
Woodwork relief
However, the hosts were fortunate to keep their advantage intact four minutes later when Artyom Kontsevoi was denied by the crossbar. Belarus continued to create chances in the second period, and the Moldova woodwork was rattled again by Dmitri Shchegrikovich's 70th-minute effort. Nevertheless, home coach Boris Tropanet was delighted with the result. "We had some luck today, but my players deserved that outcome," he said.
Tight group
The win moves Moldova a point behind Belarus in Group 5, and three points adrift of second-placed Norway, the team in possession of the second play-off place who drew 2-2 with Slovenia.
