Article body
Jankovic goal
The two sides were separated by only one point before kick-off, but Serbia and Montenegro are now four points ahead in the second play-off place with five games left. Their win was built on a period of early dominance, which paid dividends when Jankovic headed in Danko Lazovic's cross.
Spain denied
Spain - who beat San Marino by a competition record 14-0 scoreline last month - pushed hard for an equaliser throughout the encounter, but could not breach Vladimir Stojkovic's goal. Visiting coach Iñaki Sáez admitted: "Serbia and Montenegro have a very good team, and it is going to be tough, but we are not going to throw in the towel."
June games
His team welcome fourth-placed Lithuania on 3 June, when Serbia and Montenegro play leaders Belgium hoping to gain a win that would take them two points ahead at the summit.
