FK Crvena Zvezda midfield player Dejan Milovanovic scored the only goal of the game after 29 minutes, sending a free-kick into the right-hand corner of the net. It was a virtual replica of the free-kick he scored against Wales in August.
One game to go
The result meant that the Italians failed to collect the point they needed to secure top place in the section. With one game to go, they hold a two-point advantage over Serbia and Montenegro, who end their qualifying campaign with an away game against Wales on 10 October. Italy take on the group's bottom side, Azerbaijan, the same night.

Both sides finished the match with ten men after the sending-off in the dying minutes of both Serbia and Montenegro's Nikola Mijailovic and Italy's Marco Amelia. Mijailovic collected a second yellow card after fouling D'Agostino while Amelia saw red for pushing Mijailovic as the player was walking off.
