Kazakhstan and Romania could not be separated for a second time in Group 9, recording a 1-1 draw to follow their goalless stalemate in June.
In contrast to their first meeting, there were goals this time. However, Romania could not hang on to the first-half lead afforded them by Gheorghe Grozav, Abzal Beisebekov grabbing a share of the spoils with 16 minutes remaining.
The result leaves both sides on two points from two games, one behind the early leaders in the section – France and Slovakia. Both Emil Săndoi's Romania side and Kazakhstan play France in their next UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers in October, as the road to the 2013 finals in Israel continues.
