We are everybody's heroes, says Sweden's Carlgren

I just had a good feeling [for the penalties]. We had a shoot-out in training and I saved four or five. [With William Carvalho's penalty] I noticed his body language was a bit casual although maybe that's the way he plays. It was 50-50 and I went the right way and saved it.

Right now we are everybody's heroes. It feels amazing. The feeling of saving the penalty – I just wanted it for the team. There's a great team spirit so I am so happy for everybody, not just me because I saved the penalties but the team. We've been underdogs in every game but that is the strength we have. I am so happy I can't find words right now. In the dressing room, we were just singing, screaming, dancing, everything ...

I am so proud of the guys and the fans and the families that have been here – it is a fantastic feeling to be able to be captain and to get the possibility to lift the trophy.

We played a really good game today. The first half we had a hard time with Portugal – they were really good, playing aggressive football. The second half we got back into the game and got a bit more possession and in extra time we were the team that controlled the game and had a little bit more energy and wanted to go for the win. Playing in front of the fans and with this group, a lot of adrenaline goes through your body and makes you want to go on. We were so hungry and ready to sacrifice everything together and that's the reason we won.

We didn't surprise ourselves. We surprised Europe. We talked about winning the tournament inside the camp but outside we were humble. Now we stand here as champions and we always believed in it. The key was to keep the clean sheet in the first half. They are a really good team but when they didn't manage to score and they got tired, we got the space to play. The supporters were fantastic and without them it wouldn't have been possible. We are a small country and it's a long time since we won anything so it's really big for the country and I'm going to see for myself when I get home.

We believed from day one and we ran more than every team in every game – I think that's a key point because out of ten games they would probably win more than us. [Tomorrow] everyone [must go] to Kungsträdgården [in Stockholm for the team's celebrations]! We've won this all of us as a nation. We've received support from Zlatan, from the Prime Minister, from all of you at home.
