Austria pip Serbia to finals berth

Austria came from behind to defeat Denmark 4-3 and secure a place in the finals of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship ahead of fellow victors Serbia.

All three teams, along with Switzerland, started the final set of matches in Group 7 on three points following a win and a loss in their opening games, and Denmark were briefly on course to grab top spot as they moved 3-2 ahead just after the hour. A Marco Djuricin penalty and Christoph Knasmüllner's second goal turned the group in Austria's favour, however, as the mini-tournament hosts advanced ahead of Serbia – 4-2 winners against Switzerland – courtesy of a better head-to-head record.

Denmark defeated the Swiss last time out and seemingly took confidence from that victory into today's decider as Emil Larsen hooked them in front with 11 minutes played. Raphael Holzhauser headed in David Alaba's cross to equalise five minutes later, while the FC Bayern München tyro also teed up Knasmüllner for Austria's second.

The Scandinavians drew level on 34 as Nicolai Jørgensen turned the ball in following neat approach play from Jens Stryger Larsen. Jørgensen was also on hand to roll the ball into an empty net just after the hour following a defensive mistake.

That was as good as it got for Denmark, though, as Djuricin picked himself up to level from the penalty spot after being brought down by Thomas Delaney, paving the way for Knasmüllner to deliver the killer blow soon after.

"It's a sensational thing for a small country like Austria," said victorious coach Andreas Heraf. "We had the youngest team in the tournament, but the boys did it!"
