Denmark are second in Group 7 of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship elite round after a 1-0 victory against Switzerland.
Both sides are now level on three points along with section leaders Serbia, who face hosts Austria in the day's other game. Switzerland had opened with a 3-2 win against neighbours Austria on Tuesday but are now third in the group after being defeated by Nicolai Jørgensen's goal 11 minutes from half-time.
"It was a very important win today," said Denmark coach Per Andersen after seeing his side bounce back from their opening loss to Serbia. "My players played a good game. We were well organised so it was difficult for the Swiss team to make chances."
It was Martin Trümpler's side, though, who had the better of the game's early openings, Steven Zuber fluffing his lines having found himself well placed in the penalty area 15 minutes in. Admir Mehmedi and Marco Aratore also both spurned presentable chances – the latter denied by a fine save by Nicolai Larsen – before Denmark took a suprise lead, Jørgensen finishing precisely after steadying himself ten metres out.
Jørgensen was less clinical with another opportunity in the second half and Bashkim Kadrii was denied by the woodwork but it mattered not. Both teams finish their campaigns on Sunday when Denmark play Austria and Switzerland meet Serbia.
