Belgium completed their UEFA European Under-19 Championship Elite round campaign with a comprehensive 4-1 victory against Montenegro but were forced to make do with second spot in Group 1 after hosts Croatia beat Scotland 1-0 to top the section with a perfect record.
Marc Van Geersom's men needed a Scotland victory to accompany their own to have any chance of clinching a place in the final tournament with six points while Montenegro were simply looking to avoid a third consecutive reverse.
Joachim Van Damme, Maxime Lestienne and Ziguy Badibanga all struck before the former scored at the wrong end prior to the interval, with Gianni Bruno adding the fourth after half-time.
Van Damme opened the scoring on nine minutes with a header from Lukas Van Eenoo's cross, and the advantage was doubled by a 25-metre free-kick from Lestienne (16). Belgium were cruising when Badibanga beat Marko Dabović to make it 3-0 though Van Damme's own goal from a Stefan Denković cross gave Montenegro some belief.
Lestienne was sent off after 57 minutes for a tackle on Andrija Simunović but 16 minutes later the result was put beyond doubt by substitute Bruno.
