The Netherlands moved to the top of Group 6 after Luc Castaignos scored both goals in a 2-0 win against Poland.
The section hosts had been frustrated in a goalless draw with Slovakia in their opening UEFA European Under-19 Championship Elite round fixture on Tuesday, and it was a similar story up until the break in Tegelen. However, Castaignos – who was top scorer at last season's U17 finals – struck twice within 11 second-half minutes to secure his side the points, and top spot ahead Sunday's showdown against Germany. For Poland, a second successive loss leaves them no chance of qualification.
The first half featured a contrast of styles as the Netherlands' short passing game was countered by a Poland side who looked to get the ball early forward. The hosts looked the more likely with Jerson Cabral particularly menacing, but both sides were reduced to long-range efforts until Castaignos passed up the opening stanza's best opportunity in the 32nd minute – a one-on-one which goalkeeper Filip Kurto saved.
However, by the 53rd minute, Wim van Zwam's side were in front when Leandro Bacuna picked out Castaignos with a pinpoint cross, the striker killing the ball instantly before finishing into the corner. Soon after, it was two: Castaignos finding the net after centre-back Bart Schenkeveld located him with a searching ball. It was just reward for a more dynamic Dutch display in the second half with Poland only threatening from set pieces.
