Germany Under-19 coach Heiko Herrlich has left his national-team role to take over at Bundesliga strugglers VfL Bochum 1848.
Immediate release
The 37-year-old former Bayer 04 Leverkusen, VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, BV Borussia Dortmund and Germany striker has signed a contract until summer 2012, and replaces Marcel Koller who was sacked on 20 September. After talks between Bochum chairman Werner Altegoer and German Football Association (DFB) president Theo Zwanziger, Herrlich was immediately released from his present contract, having earlier this month led his side through to the UEFA European Under-19 Championship Elite round in spring.
U17 success
A UEFA Champions League winner with Dortmund, Herrlich gained his coaching licence in 2005 and later joined the DFB set-up, leading Germany to the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup semi-finals and then becoming U19 chief. Bochum are second from bottom of the Bundesliga, having picked up four points in as many games under caretaker Frank Heinemann.
