Perennial contenders Serbia and Greece will both take part in the 2009/10 UEFA European Under-19 Championship Elite round after making short work of Group 5.
Impressive successes
Greece, losing finalists in 2007, were quickly into their stride in the qualifying round, second-half goals from Stelios Vasiliou and substitute Ioannis Simosis securing victory against the Faroe Islands in Jagodina. Serbia, containing several members of the squad that played at the 2008 UEFA European U17 Championship finals, were even more impressive, strikes from Vojkan Miljković and Filip Djuričić giving the mini-tournament hosts a two-goal cushion before the 66th-minute dismissal of Belarus's Aleksandr Sverchinski. Further efforts from Marko Šćepović, Saša Marković and Goran Brkić completed the victory.
Progress secured
The Matchday 1 winners each secured progress in their second round of games, Nikolaos Karelis's 59th-minute effort proving enough for Greece to see off Belarus in Kragujevac. Forward Šćepović sealed Serbia's progress to the next stage in the shape of a 2-0 win against the Faroe Islands, opening the scoring in the 30th minute at the Gradski Stadium and adding a clinching second from the penalty spot 12 minutes later.
Šćepović shines
The same player, whose nation reached the U19 semi-finals in Ukraine last summer, settled the Serbia-Greece summit meeting on the final day of action in the section, Šćepović scoring what proved to be the only goal of the game at Kragujevac's Cika Daca Stadium on the stroke of half-time. The Faroe Islands, meanwhile, ensured they would finish third in the section by holding out for a goalless draw against Belarus in the other fixture but cannot go through.
