Portugal lost 2-1 to Gambia on the final day of the FIFA U-20 World Cup group stage - but still ensured that five European teams would be in the Round of 16 as Austria drew 0-0 with Chile to finish second in their pool.

Gama injury
A point in Montreal would have given Portugal the runners-up position in Group C and Feliciano Condesso headed in a cross from Pedro Correia on 20 minutes to put the European contenders ahead. Ousman Jallow equalised with a penalty just before the break and although Gambia captain Ken Jammeh was sent off early in the second half, Abdoulie Mansally's free-kick deflected in off Rui Patricio with 22 minutes left to seal a 2-1 win. However, Portugal, who lost skipper Bruno Gama soon to a potentially serious foot injury, knew before kick-off that a one-goal defeat would mean their record as one of the four best third-placed teams from the six pools would still earn a berth in the Round of 16. Mexico topped the group with the only perfect record of the round as they defeated New Zealand 2-1.

Austria held
Both New Zealand and Austria were aware prior to kick-off in Toronto that they were already guaranteed progress from Group A. Although Austria had the better of the play and Peter Hackmair had a goal disallowed, they were unable to become the first team to score against Chile in these finals and ended the group in second, still two points behind, and now meet Gambia while the South Americans will play Portugal. Congo's 2-0 win against Canada gave them progress in third, with Costa Rica - by a single goal - and Korea DPR missing out.

Round of 16
The Round of 16 begins on Wednesday when UEFA European Under-19 Championship holders Spain play Brazil in Burnaby and the Czech Republic take on Japan in Victoria, with the victors to meet in the weekend's quarter-finals, while Austria face Gambia in Edmonton and their potential opponents the United States and Uruguay meet in Toronto. On Thursday, Portugal are up against Chile in Edmonton hoping to play the winners of Nigeria's Ottawa fixture with Zambia, while Poland encounter holders Argentina in Toronto, Mexico then ending the round against Congo.
