Matip winner
It was a dramatic victory for Germany against China in Tilburg, as the Asian side twice led before succumbing 3-2 to a last-gasp Marvin-Job Matip goal. Tao Chen took just four minutes to put China - coached by German Eckhard Krautzun - ahead, but within seconds Christian Gentner had equalised, following up a parried Michael Delura shot.
Quarter-final sealed
Again Tao struck, from the penalty spot in the 20th minute, but Nicky Adler's 30th-minute chip over China goalkeeper Cheng Yang levelled matters and with extra time looming, Matip headed in Delura's cross for the winner. Germany stay in Tilburg to face a quarter-final against holders Brazil, who defeated Syria 1-0 with a 43rd-minute Rafael penalty in the same venue today.
US ousted
Another German-born coach was denied by European opposition in Enschede, as Sigi Schmid's United States were beaten 3-1 by Italy. Hunter Freeman's 44th-minute penalty gave the USA a half-time advantage, but nine minutes into the second period Daniele Galloppa restored parity.
Azzurrini through
Eight minutes later Graziano Pelle edged Italy ahead and a quarter-hour from the end Sacha Kljestan's own goal meant the Azzurrini - who lost their first two games in the competition before defeating Canada - were through. Their opposition on Friday will be Morocco, who overcame Japan 1-0 with an injury-time Mouhssine Iajour goal.
Wednesday games
On Wednesday Europe's four other contenders, the Netherlands, Turkey, Ukraine and Spain, will attempt to join Italy and Germany in the last eight. In the early game in Doetinchem, Ukraine play Nigeria, and later in the same venue the hosts face Chile with the two victors to collide in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, in Emmen, Spain and Turkey meet in a rematch of the 2004 UEFA European Under-19 Championship final - won by the Spanish - with Colombia or Argentina awaiting the winners.
