Second-half goals from Nicky Adler and Marvin Matip ensured Germany kicked off their FIFA World Youth Championship campaign with a 2-0 win in Enschede against nine-man Egypt.
Late goals
TSV 1860 München striker Adler came on as a replacement for Sebastian Freis on 72 minutes and only needed three minutes to score after great build-up play from Marcell Janssen. Defender Matip's goal in added time completed a 2-0 win that took Germany top in Group D on goal difference from the United States who defeated Argentina 1-0 in the day's other game.
Wasted chances
The sides were well matched in the first half with both sides creating chances. On 15 minutes Michael Delura saw his volley sail wide for Germany, then two minutes later Jansen was denied by Shaaban. Midway through the first half Egypt struck back and on 29 minutes Abdallah Said was denied by Germany goalkeeper René Adler.
Adler scores
After the break Germany slowly took control and 15 minutes before the end they were finally rewarded. Jansen beat two tackles before seeing his shot blocked by Egypt goalkeeper Hamada Shaaban but Adler was waiting to convert.
Late dismissals
Egypt's chances of getting back into the game were ended by a pair of late dismissals. Abdallah Shahat was sent off for a second yellow card seven minutes from the end and Mohamed Mahmoud followed shortly afterwards with a straight red card. Germany soon made their two-man advantage count, Matip hitting their second in stoppage time.
USA next
Germany next play the United States, 1-0 victors in the section's other match today, on Tuesday when Egypt take on Argentina.
