European's Group B representatives experienced contrasting fortunes in their opening 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship games, Ukraine defeating Panama 3-1 while Turkey dramatically lost to China.
Aliev double
Surprise semi-finalists at the 2003/04 UEFA European Under-19 Championship Ukraine enjoyed a strong start to their campaign against Panama. After dominating the early stages, Oleksandr Aliev set his side to victory with two quick-fire goals. The FC Dynamo Kyiv striker broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after 20 minutes before doubling the lead two minutes later.
Turkey sunk
A Volodymyr Arzhanov own goal threw the Central American side a lifeline on 26 minutes but Meksym Feshchuk soon restored Yuri Kalitvintsev's side's lead, which they never looked like relinquishing as they cruised to victory. Things were decidedly less calm for Turkey in Utrecht, as they were denied a point by a superb last-minute strike from substitute Zhao Xuri.
Gökhan goal
Senol Ustaömer's side were behind for much of the encounter, after Tan Wangsong's 21st-minute opener but looked to have earned a share of the spoils when Gökhan Güleç tapped in from close range with five minutes remaining. But Zhao sank Turkey with a superb last-gasp volley, which leaves the side needing something from their match against Panama on Tuesday, when Ukraine will face China.
