Article body
Group A is finely poised after the first round of matches were played on Tuesday, with all four teams level on a point apiece after both games were drawn. uefa.com rounds up the reaction from the coaches involved.
BELGIUM 0-0 UKRAINE
Marc Van Geersom, Belgium
It was a close game between two sides who play very different systems. In the first half there were few chances as there was no space for the forwards. In the second period more space became available and there were opportunities for both sides. Ukraine have a very good defence and I think both goalkeepers were excellent. Ukraine are a team blessed with individual skills and have a number of players who have first-team experience with their clubs, something which gives young players a great chance to progress.
Pavlo Yakovenko, Ukraine
The first game in these tournaments is always the worst as the players are very nervous. There was no space and it was a very equal and even contest. We had studied tapes of Belgium and knew how they played and that they are a good, strong team, so in this respect they did not surprise us. I am not really happy, but I am only ever happy when my sides win and we only played as well as we were allowed. The Belgium players impressed me with their individual skills, but the same is true of all the teams at these finals; all have a high skill level and possess top-class finishers.
SWITZERLAND 1-1 ITALY
Pierre-André Schürmann, Switzerland
The Italians are a clever team, but my youngsters kept their nerve. It is important to come back against a team like Italy, it shows the character and mental strength of my players. We tried all we could to win the game and perhaps we deserved more. We conceded a silly goal - we made a bad pass instead of playing simply; perhaps we were too naïve. Otherwise, we showed moments of quality and a lot of character, but we have to be more ruthless as far as our finishing is concerned. You know my mentality, I'm a bad loser. Frustration is part of a coach's job, and I'm frustrated that we conceded this goal on the counterattack.
Paolo Berettini, Italy
It was an excellent match. We had the edge in the first half, but we suffered in the second half, so a draw was a fair result. It was difficult for us to play the first match against the hosts in front of their splendid public, so I have to say that I'm satisfied with the result.
