No answer
England had entered the match needing just a point to join Group B winners Austria in the last four but they had no answer to second-half goals from Lukas Nachtman, Josef Brodský and Pavel Širanec. The Czechs' reward is a semi-final against Italy on Wednesday.

Positive start
Czech coach Michal Bílek made five changes to the side beaten 4-1 by Austria - two of them enforced by suspension - and his players were positive from the start, Širanec and Ladislav Volesak pushing up on the flanks to support the front two of Petr Mikolanda and Brodský.

Offside goals
Michal Kadlec swept a left-foot shot just wide in the early stages but England limited the Czechs to half-chances in the opening period. Both sides did get the ball into the net, England through Tommy Wright, the Czech Republic through Aleš Neuwirth but both times the player was offside.

Steele error
England, missing the injured Andrew Davies in defence, reached half-time having achieved their aim of keeping things tight but they never recovered from the Czechs' opening goal on 48 minutes. Luke Steele failed to get a clean punch on Volesak's free-kick and Lukas Nachtman volleyed the loose ball into the empty net.

Brodský doubles lead
Brodský doubled the Czechs' lead in the 54th minute. From a Volesak lay-off he unleashed a fierce half-volley which crashed in off the crossbar. England looked shaken and after Volesak had steered a shot just wide, Širanec made it three in the 63rd minute when he broke in the inside-left channel and beat Steele with a low shot into the far corner.
