Bottom of the section
Although Sébastien Grax's last-minute penalty saved the French from a second defeat in Group B, cancelling out an earlier Salmin Cehajic spot-kick, they finished bottom of the section with two points from a possible nine.
Berger booking
Paul Gludovatz's Austria team, meanwhile, remain unbeaten as they advance to a semi-final against Portugal as surprise group winners. The only negative for Gludovatz was a booking for defender Markus Berger which will keep him out of the semi-final.
Entertaining second period
Playing to stay in the competition, France were the more positive side in the first half but made few inroads against the Austrian defence. A more entertaining second period brought chances, notably for Austria on the counterattack. Mario Fürthaler and Roman Kienast both spurned opportunities before Austria took the lead through a penalty by midfield player Cehajic eight minutes from time.
Going home
Grax's late reply means that, together with Portugal's Paulo Sérgio, he is now the tournament's joint-leading scorer with three goals. That will be no consolation, however, for a team who two years ago won the FIFA World Under-17 Championship but who now head home early from Liechtenstein.
