Giant step for Norway

Norway are through to the finals of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship after winning Group 6.

Norway are through to the finals of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship after winning qualifying Group 6.

One-point margin
The Norwegians edged out their hosts in a mini-tournament in Hungary to take a place in the finals of the competition this summer by a one-point margin. The decisive game of the tournament proved to be Norway's first as they came from behind to win against Hungary with a last-minute goal at the Municipal stadium in Kecskemét.

Late winner
Tamas Csehi gave the home side the lead after 25 minutes but Norway kept their nerve and levelled the scores four minutes after the half-time interval with a strike from Espen Ruud. The game looked to be headed for a draw until the very last minute when Olav Tuelo Johanneson found a winner for Norway.

Equalising goal
Norway left it late in their second game too, winning 1-0 against Greece thanks to an 88th-minute goal from Erik Mjelde, a result which left them needing just one point from their final game to win the group. Mjelde scored the opening goal in that fixture against the Netherlands but his side were denied a third successive victory as Mounir El Hamdaoui struck in the 71st minute to earn the Greeks a point.

Second place
Hungary finished second in the group, recovering from their first-day defeat to win their remaining games in comfort. They were ahead within a minute of the start of their 3-1 win against the Netherlands, with Krisztian Vadocz scoring, and it was all over for the Dutch side before half-time as Gabor Bori and Jozsef Kanta added to their total. Stijn Schaars pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time to give his side some consolation.

Two for Kanta
Hungary ran out 4-2 winners against Greece in their final game. In a frenzied opening period Vadocz's early goal was cancelled out by Georgios Angelides only for Kanta and Bori to score their second goals of the tournament to put Hungary 3-1 up on 27 minutes. Panagiotis Lagos pulled a goal back on 33 minutes, but Kanta's second goal of the game 12 minutes from time confirmed the result in Hungary's favour.

No wins
That defeat, coupled with the Netherlands' defeat against Norway, meant that Greece and the Netherlands were to leave the tournament without a win after a 1-1 draw in the game between the two sides on the opening day of the tournament. Ilias Eleftheriades opened the scoring for Greece after 32 minutes only for Collins John to equalise for the Netherlands on 72 minutes.
