Olsen return lifts Norway U19s

Egil Olsen, who led Norway's senior side from 1990 until 1998, is the new coach of the country's Under-19 side.

European campaign
The 60-year-old will lead Norway as they attempt to qualify for the 2002/03 UEFA European Championship campaign in Liechtenstein. They will meet Greece, the Netherlands and Hungary in the competition's second qualifying round with the group winners qualifying for the finals.

'Good to be back'
"It's good to be back," Olsen said. "I have an open mind about the future and coaching adult professionals again. If I get an offer from a national team or an interesting club, I will consider it." Olsen will combine the coaching job for the boys with a part-time job as lecturer at Norway's high school for sport in Oslo.

Perfect guide
"It is a pleasure to hire him again," said Per Ravn Omdal, the president of the Norwegian Football Association. "With his experience and knowledge he will be the perfect guide for our youngsters."

International pedigree
Olsen's international pedigree is well renowned. He played for the national team in the 1960s and 70s and was known as a skilful dribbler. He went on to become the country's most successful international coach, leading Norway to the FIFA World Cup finals in 1994 and 1998. Norway reached the last 16 in the latter tournament, where they lost 1-0 against Italy.

Wimbledon spell
Under Olsen, Norway also rose to second place behind Brazil in the FIFA world rankings in 1993 and were unbeaten at home in all internationals for a seven-year spell from 1991 until 1998. After he left the national team he became manager of Wimbledon FC in the English Premiership for the 1999/00 season but was sacked in April 2000, two weeks before the club were relegated. However, Olsen saved Oslo club Vålerenga Fotball from relegation in 1999 in another foray into club management.
