Turkey hit back to earn Ukraine draw

Substitute Recep Nıyaz fired in an added-time free-kick as Turkey twice came from behind to deny Ukraine a first victory in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship elite round.

Both teams were eliminated prior to kick-off but Yurii Moroz's side looked set to end a frustrating Group 4 campaign on a high in Ratingen when Dmytro Khlyobas made it 2-1 with 11 minutes reminaing, just 60 seconds after Beykan Şimşek had cancelled out Andriy Blyznychenko's opener. Recep had other ideas, however, making it 2-2 with virtually the last kick of the match.

"We had a good chance to win at least one game here, but missed out at the last," said Moroz. "It will be a good lesson for my players." His side finished bottom of the group but at least got off the mark, using the counterattack to good effect four minutes before the interval as Vitaliy Hemeha's cross was turned in by skipper Bliznichenko.

Recep teed up Beykan for the equaliser only for Ukraine to hit back immediately, Khlyobas adding the finishing touch to another break. "This was our worst performance of the tournament," said coach Ercan Abdullah. "Psychologically our having no chance of qualifying really affected us." With Germany beating Switzerland in the day's other game Recep's last-gasp set piece means Turkey finish second in the section behind the hosts.
