Beaten 2-1 by the Netherlands in their opening game, Austria got back on track in UEFA European Under-17 Championship elite round Group 2 against Portugal – who drew 0-0 with Croatia in their first fixture – thanks to second-half strikes by Michael Gregoritsch and Christian Gartner.
Following a quiet first half, notable only for Gregoritsch's early attempt, which was chalked off for offside, the match came to life after the interval with Gonçalo Paciência firing just wide for Portugal, and João Teixeira also going close for the hosts. But it was Thomas Janeschitz's Austria who took the lead when Gregoritsch got his head to a Gartner corner on 52 minutes.
Gartner doubled Austria's lead from the penalty spot after João Cancelo was penalised for a foul on Nikola Dovedan, and it might have been 3-0 five minutes from time had Christoph Martschinko not crashed his shot against the post. Portugal received further proof that this was not to be their day when Bruma missed a near open goal at the death.
Portugal can only qualify if they beat the Netherlands by a scoreline of 4-1 or better on Tuesday and Austria draw with Croatia. A point behind the Dutch hosts, Austria will hope the leaders do not win, allowing them to reach the finals with victory in their game.
