Croatia and the Netherlands played out a goalless draw in UEFA European Under-17 Championship elite round Group 2 which blows qualification for the final tournament wide open.
After Austria, beaten by the Netherlands on Matchday 1, defeated Portugal in the early game, the hosts could have wrapped up first place and a finals spot with victory today. But Croatia held out for a second straight 0-0 draw and can still qualify on Tuesday if they beat Austria and the Netherlands, still top, slip up against Portugal.
In a game where both defences came out on top, chances were few and far between. Croatia fashioned the best opening of the first half when Mateo Kovačić's corner was met by Antonio Milić, but the defender failed to beat Boy Jong. Ivan Gudelj's side continued to press after the break, yet it was the Dutch who nearly claimed all three points 13 minutes from time. The lively Anass Achahbar created space before finding Tonny Trindade de Vilhena, who forced a fine save from Ivan Banić.
The Netherlands, a point ahead of Austria, can guarantee their place at the final tournament in Serbia with a win against Portugal on Tuesday. A draw would even be enough if the Austria and Croatia also share the points.
